Aliya & Jake - Downtown Chicago Engagement Session {Lincoln Park, Lincoln Park Zoo Nature Boardwalk, North Avenue Beach}

I know that to do a blog post well, for all reasons but especially SEO, words need to help tell the story. For this session, I really am speechless and feel like the photos just need to do the talking. But I’ll still talk about how much I am in love love love with every photo from this session and how I adore Aliya & Jake, and love how they adore one another. Aliya is full of joy and light & the way she looks at Jake makes my heart so happy. The way Jake just randomly kisses her and snuggles her in close is straight out of a rom-com. Not gonna’ lie, I usually have to direct most guys to kiss their bride-to-be but Jake made it a breeze for me. These two balance each other out in all the ways and I’m SO happy for them. I’m also so honored they chose me to document this exciting (albeit weird pandemic time to be engaged!) time in their journey.

We started near their home in Lincoln Park with their two silly pups and then headed to Lincoln Park Zoo to the Nature Boardwalk & then across the street to North Avenue Beach. A big rain storm was expected to pass through Chicago just as we were supposed to start that evening so we started a bit sooner to at least get the part in with their dogs. Then the beautiful sunlight disappeared - Thanks, Mother Nature! We accomplished the photos with the pups and it still wasn’t raining & it appeared that the big storm was going to dodge Chicago so we headed to the Zoo! Thanks for real this time, Mother Nature!

While there, that storm did come through after all but it was only a light rain. Ok, Mother Nature, what is going on?! Luckily we were near an area where we could take cover. We waited it out for a bit under the Honeycomb structure because we were waiting for a wedding party to finish their photos anyway and then the sun magically came out while it was still raining! The light was BEAUTIFUL and Aliya & Jake were up for some rain photos so we went for it. It was hard to pick a favorite from this session, but the rain dancing ones are probably the most romantic photos I’ve ever made and I LOVE them! But I also love every single photo from their session… ;)

I also really owe Mother Nature a big apology for all the back-and-forth I’d been doing in my head. Turned out to be the most perfect evening!

Lincoln Park

A&J live in Lincoln Park so we started there and Jake proposed at North Avenue Beach so we finished there! I’ve known Aliya for a few years from back in my PAWS days, but North Avenue Beach has always reminded me of her so it was fitting that that’s where they got engaged! So happy for you, friends!

I’ve started to really reflect on why I love couple sessions so much and this session was the perfect example of why. I love love. I love watching people interact naturally. I strive for genuine emotion and to tell your story in a way that captures you. All I really do is put you in poses together that flatter you and then I watch what you do naturally and go with it! Sounds kind of creepy when I type it out, haha, but it’s how the magic happens! I promise all you need to do is relax and have a ton of fun. Bonus points if you’re willing to dance in the rain :)

Recently engaged?!

Make your session all about you and what you love to do together. Bring your pup(s) for a part of your session if you have any. Stay at home and have a cocktail or cook some dinner. Or head to your favorite patio for a beer. Grab coffee from your neighborhood go-to. Swing by your first date spot, or the spot where you were proposed to. Like ice cream?! Let’s get some! Have a unique car? Bring it along?! You’re into skydiving? Let’s go! Yes, Chicago has a ton of iconic locations for your photo session, but you will make the most of your session when you have fun with it and make it your own & trust your photographer.

Chicago Engagement Session at Two Hearted Queen Coffee Shop

Liz & Tony are getting married in Chicago this summer! We spent a sunny morning at my favorite coffee shop, Two Hearted Queen, having coffee and photographing. When you book a wedding with me, an engagement session is always included in your package. This helps me get to know you both and helps you get comfortable with me. I'm going to be with you all day on your wedding day, so it helps to get to know one another and to establish trust. My engagement sessions are customized to you and what you like to do as a couple. Whether it be having coffee on a lazy morning at home, having a drink at your favorite pub, rock-climbing or strolling through this beautiful city. Although we will definitely take some nice portraits of you as a couple, I focus on details and take a lifestyle approach to documenting your engagement. I give direction, then let you cozy up and that's when the magic happens! The way you look at each other, the way you cuddle, the hand-holding, etc. It's the moments when you forget I'm there that are my favorite!

If you're in Chicago, you must check out Two Hearted Queen in Lakeview. They're seriously the best! Thanks THQ for having us, and for the delicious coffee.

Liz and Tony, I can't wait for your summer wedding - it's going to be so lovely!

Favorite Moments of 2017 - Year in Review

2017 was an amazing year for me and I'm so grateful for all of you for trusting me with your most precious/intimate/honest/real moments. I love what I do. For real. I get to document some of the most meaningful moments in people's lives. As well as the more "everyday moments" but I love every second of it. I like to do an end-of-year website update so I go through all of my sessions from the year and pick my favorites. It helps me see how far I've come, and how much I've grown. This year, I got out of my comfort zone. I took chances. I pushed myself to photograph from my heart; to photograph what spoke to me and to tell more honest stories. In addition to updating the website, I wanted to do a re-cap of the year, highlighting my favorite photos & moments but then this post got crazy long. If you know me, I couldn't narrow it down any further than what I've come up with and this isn't even all of it! So here goes. A selection of some of my favorite sessions, moments and personal treasures from all of last year. Druuuuuummmmmroooooooooolllllllllll, please.

I love love love love love LOVE so let's start with the beautiful couples!

Photographed my beautiful friend getting ready on her wedding morning on a steamy July morning in Chicago at the Langham Hotel

I second-shot with Jennifer of Angelic Angles Photography for a beautiful Milwaukee wedding. We photographed the wedding party at Villa Terrace Museum and I was BLOWN away by the beauty. I can't wait to go back there and photograph! I really miss shooting with Jennifer. We used to be the dream team when I lived in Madison. She's amazing - seriously, the best.

Second-shot with Melissa Ferrara of Iron & Honey Photography this fall. So much fun to work with a fellow Chicago photographer.

Babies! So many friends had babies this year!!

Boudoir - a few of the ones I can show!

I photographed a few events for PAWS. Also made some portraits of my friends' dogs while they were vacationing because I can't help myself!

High School Seniors

My Family. I went home a handful of times this summer for many birthdays! My sister and her littles did the Bubble Run so I took my camera for that. After that, it was Skyler's first birthday and then Avianna's SIXTH birthday. Squeezed in a quick shoot with all of my nieces with some goats... it didn't go as planned but we still got some beautiful photos!

Photographed all season long for Vintage Garage Chicago. If you're in Uptown Chicago on the third Sunday of the month from April through October, you must check them out. Must!

Grabbed some quick family photos for the best people on earth to celebrate them becoming a quartet!

Purposely took my camera down to the Loop a few times this summer. Normally I'm without it but made a point to take it, especially for the Chicagohenge

Much love friends! Thanks so much for following along - you have no idea how much it means. Here's to 2018 - I can't wait to see what comes!

xoxo - Courtney
